Captains August Update

CAPTAIN’S LOG AUGUST 2019

Where did the time go. So much has happened since my last report so apologies if I miss out something significant.

Mens team up first. What a season though not quite finished yet. In the League 13 wins from 14 matches thereby winning the 3rd division and gaining promotion to the second. The final act will come a week on Sunday at Hexham where the 5 manteam will take on Beamish Park in the final of the North Durham Knockout competition. League team members were Sean Foster, John Ellison, Dave Pringle, Rio Jones, Ryan Mackie, Ian Baxter, Derek Goldsmith, Dan Ellison, Graeme Foster, Adam Laidler, Eddie Mackie and Jack Laidler.

Many thanks to the team members who also supported the team by caddying during the season and also to regular caddies, Ray Garden, Bernie Munroe, Keith Purvis, Gary Jones, Norman Baxter, Geoff O’Hara, and to the outstanding Team Captain Manager, Jan Foster.

Since October 1st 2018 we have now run 84 internal and open competitions(not including ladies). These have gone extremely well thanks to the continued hard work of Competition Secretary, Ian Cassap supported by BernieMunroe and John Walvin. The final 2 medals this year will be run as 3 ball drawn competitions as we continue to come to terms with the BRS system.

The club will be hosting the Clark Cup final, Durham County’s most prestigious knockout competition on Sunday 1stSeptember.

CAPTAIN v CHAIRMAN. Congratulations to the CHAIRMAN on the win and a good day had by all. The evening BBQ was also a great success apart from the fact the CAPTAIN had to represent the CHAIRMAN with the trophy !

Congratulations to new club champion Dan Ellison who followed up his Junior Club Championship win by having the best score in both rounds of the Mens event to win by 4 shots.

The club mourned the passing of its much loved President Jim Kelly who passed away on the morning of CAPTAIN’s DAY.

KNOCKOUT COMPS. Reaching the final stages and progressing well.

In July we hosted the Annual Triangular match involving Seaham and Wearside played now to commemorate past Captain Stuart Hunter. This was a very successful event in terms of the organisation and many thanks to all who supported and particularly to Dave Hall. Our team finished as runners up to Wearside.

The NERGA INTER TEAM (HCP 8-15) are progressing well under the direction of Brian Storey and we are hosting our own NERGA event on Saturday 31st August.

PRO AM . A success in terms of the staging of it and a significant reduction in the financial loss incurred by our club. However, still a loss, and a full review will be undertaken in the very near future. Many thanks to everyone who supported the day.

The course. Congratulations to Wayne and the greens staff for their sterling work to date. Unfortunately as I write we are in the middle of our period of annual greens maintenance and have had much more rain than we require. Many thanks to the members for their patience and understanding during this time. Everything will be up and running in the very near future.

LADIES. Congratulations on the league winning success of the ladies team and a whole range of other successful competition performances.

JUNIORS. Congratulations to JLO, Joanna Ellison with support from Gary and Jean Jones for the impact our junior members are currently making within and outside the club. 5 juniors on the Mens Team speaks volumes and the Junior Team have had a very successful season with the Junior County Foursomes final still to come involving Dan Ellison and Ryan Mackie.

Finally many thanks to everyone who made my Captain’s day such a success and in raising almost £900 for Pancreatic Cancer UK. It would be nice to hit the £1000 mark by the end of the year.

Good luck to everyone for the remainder of the season.
